For three decades, women on our campus have unlocked new skills, perspectives and opportunities to reconnect with themselves, their families and communities. Grace House provides that key. In the early 1990s, we knew we weren’t fully supporting the re-entry community in Chicago if we didn’t have a stand-alone home for women. In September 1994, the doors opened at 1801 W. Adams St. As we plan for a future of more residential privacy and amenity upgrades for Saint Leonard’s Ministries, inclusive of Grace House, we celebrate our past and present. |
We asked Grace House team members about what makes this home so unique.
Here is their insight …
How do you feel when you walk into Grace House every day?
“I feel like I should be here – in a place where women come to seek help. The joy it gives me to be part of an organization such as this. We are all women from different walks of life, but we walk together. At the beginning to the end of each day, you feel good – that you have helped someone no matter how small or great the task may be.”
“I feel my every day at Grace House helps me to help the Gracettes transform back into life. Reconnecting back to their communities, as well as them back to their families.”
Patricia Green, Case Manager
How does your experience as a Grace House alumna inform your mindset and approach to serve current residents?
“My experience as an alumna has served as a guide to serve the women from a holistic approach. Because of my lived experience as a resident of Grace House, it helps me better navigate how I handle the women I serve. I am able to show compassion, yet hold the women accountable.”
“It is a great honor and privilege to serve women in this capacity because it also keeps me humbled and inspired. Living a lifestyle of success helps me serve as not only a role model but support to the women. I am in a puddle of gratitude with my role at GH.”
Mariah Greer, Lead Resident Coordinator
What guidance do you offer to Grace House residents when they arrive on Day One?
“Be open to learning new and amazing things about yourself and your new life. Coming into a new place and having a second chance is amazing. Don’t stop, and be open to this new chapter of obtaining knowledge in all areas and aspects of your life.”
“Never stop learning or wanting to be taught. Keep reaching and excelling.”
Latrice Johnson, Resident Coordinator
Why are transition plans such a crucial component of assistance to Grace House residents when they are ready for independent living?
“The transitional plan creates an individualized foundation and a step-by-step plan for success. The plan is created shortly after the resident arrives, thus there is plenty of time to make needed adjustments and compensate for changes that may occur during the residents stay at Grace House. This plan allows us to dive deep into the expectations of the resident who will be transitioning to real-world situations.”
June Reed, Alumni Care Coordinator
